World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned on Monday that the Delta variant of the coronavirus is spreading across the world at a “scorching pace.”
Europe is one of the hotspots of the Delta variant. In the past TWO weeks, many countries in Europe have witnessed a surge in new infections and incidence rates.
According to a threat assessment published on the website of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, 90% of new infections in the EU/EEA are projected to be due to the Delta variant by the end of August.

Confronted with a surge in new infections, many countries in Europe have taken corresponding measures. France is considering making COVID-19 vaccinations compulsory. Cyprus and the Netherlands have announced to reintroduce restriction measures against the pandemic.
By contrast, the U.K. Health Minister on Monday confirmed that the final easing of lockdown restrictions in England will go ahead on July 19. Before this confirmation, more than 4,000 scientists, doctors, nurses and other professionals signed a letter condemning the British government’s plan of lifting lockdown measures, calling it “dangerous and premature.”
The spread of the Delta variant casts a shadow over Europe’s economic rebound, the Financial Times reported on Monday. The article said that the lifting of most lockdown measures across Europe in recent months has brought a surge in business activities, thus prompting economists to upgrade their forecasts for the growth in the region. However, the rapid spread of the Delta variant is now making economists feel concerned that Europe’s economic outlook might be undermined by high infection levels and a new round of restriction measures.
